The Dream Gala

Learn Our History: The Dream Gala started in 2008 by PLUMAS, a student advocacy org focused on political and social justice issues. Students in this org were undocumented immigrants, documented immigrants, and U.S. Citizens who were from mixed-immigration status families. Together, they wanted to be proactive to help address the inequities and the lack of financial aid offered to Undocumented Students at UMD. In their first year they fundraised more than $9,000 raising funds for DACA renewals, legal fees, and emergency crisis help. Since then, PLUMAS now collaborates with Migrating Shells to plan the Dream Gala along with the Immigrant and Undoc Student Life Office.

What It Is: The Dream Gala is a celebratory event spearheaded towards the end of the year that focuses on the concept of existence as resilience and fostering joy among immigrant students and allies. There is a fundraising component where students, staff, faculty, and outside members if able, can donate to the crisis fund that supports undocumented students.

Who is Invited: YOU! We invite anyone from the UMD and DMV community to join us in this event which is full of performances, community building and great speakers that inspire us in the immigration rights movement. All are welcome and donating is not required to join. We welcome others who want to show solidarity or learn more about the immigrant experience.

Inquires: For any questions please email undoc@umd.edu. If you are interested in attending, performing, or donating feel free to reach out.

The immigrant diaspora in the University of Maryland is vibrant, they’re full of hustle. You know, we are here and we’re expanding so much in our own right. We’re finding our own voices and making ourselves stand out, not just assimilating. We are taking pride in our origins and leading forward.
