What is Maryland LEAD?
Maryland LEAD offers students opportunities to engage in unique leadership learning experiences that complement and enhance the academic, involvement, career, and community-centered experiences at the University of Maryland. These opportunities include workshops, presentations, conferences, and retreats that focus on understanding and practicing leadership for positive change.
Who can participate in a Maryland LEAD Program?
Any student enrolled at UMD can participate in a Maryland LEAD program. Students to do not need formal leadership experience or a positional role to participate. Our programs are based on the idea that each individual possesses leadership capacity. The only necessary traits are the motivation to learn, willingness to engage with oneself and others, and active participation in the community through the practice of leadership.
Why should I participate in a Maryland LEAD Program?
There are numerous benefits to participating in a leadership development program. Several of the top reasons include:

When are programs offered?

Is there a cost to participate?
No! Our leadership program opportunities are completely free and include all materials. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the requirements and demands of a program before signing-up.
I am looking for someone to provide a leadership training for my student group or class. Can you help?
Yes. The Maryland LEAD Program's staff and trained student facilitators can provide your group with workshops, presentations, and programs on variety of leadership-related topics. If you are interested in more information on specific outreach opportunities, Complete an TLI To-Go Program Request.
When does the Terrapin Leadership Institute (TLI) take place?
Registration for TLI begins a couple weeks before the first week of classes. Sessions begin approximately 4-5 weeks after classes begin, and conclude six weeks later. Check the TLI home page for session times and topics.
Who is eligible to participate in TLI?
The TLI tracks are open to all University of Maryland students; both undergraduate and graduate students are welcome to participate.

What is the cost of TLI?
TLI is completely FREE of charge to all students at the University of Maryland!
What is a track? Are there differences between each track?
A TLI track refers to a particular 6 week series. The approach of the Terrapin Leadership Institute is to focus on the skills and practices essential to socially responsible leadership.
Can I participate in multiple tracks?
Students can participate in one TLI track per semester but are welcome to return in future semesters for different track offerings. Many of our students that complete the Foundational Leadership track return for the Organizational Leadership track.
