Maryland Mentor Corps programs provide high quality mentoring that enriches learning opportunities for college students, elementary school students, and the local community.
Our Programs
We recruit UMD students to serve as mentors for the following programs at the start of each semester.
Maryland Reading Program (MRP)
The Maryland Reading Program (formerly America Reads) is a literacy tutoring program for first and second grade students in Prince George's County Public Schools. University of Maryland mentors work one-on-one with students twice a week, providing extra instruction and support in reading and writing. All mentors receive extensive training in Reading Recovery and general tutoring methods.
The Maryland Reading Program runs Tuesday through Thursday, from approximately 7:30 to 10:30 am. Mentors are required to work at least one, consistent day a week for the duration of the semester. MRP is being conducted IN-PERSON, and transportation to/from the schools is provided.
MRP Goals and Benefits
- Engage children in enjoyable experiences with literature, reading, writing, and listening.
- Help children feel successful by providing positive feedback and support.
- Improve reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and decoding skills.
- Improve spelling of high frequency words and use of spelling patterns in unknown words.
- Develop a sense of the importance of community involvement in University of Maryland students.
How Students Are Selected for the Maryland Reading Program
Teachers and reading specialists at each of our partner schools identify specific first and second grade students who would most benefit from participation in our program. Students participate on a semester basis.
Maryland Math Program (MMP)
The Maryland Math Program (formerly America Counts) is an after-school math tutoring program for fourth grade students. University of Maryland mentors work with groups of two to four students twice a week after school, providing homework help and engaging students in math "centers" that review difficult math concepts in an active, hands-on way.
The Maryland Math Program runs Tuesday through Thursday, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Mentors are required to work at least one, consistent day a week for the duration of the semester. MMP is being conducted IN-PERSON, and transportation to/from the schools is provided.
MMP Goals and Benefits
Maryland Math Program participants will:
- Experience enriching activities that develop a positive attitude about mathematics, increase motivation, and link basic mathematical concepts to everyday life skills
- Boost their self-confidence and self-esteem in their ability to do mathematics
- Be exposed to career possibilities that utilize mathematical concepts and skills, such as engineering, computer science and math education
- Develop collaborative thinking and teamwork
- Improve strategies for taking mathematics assessments and gain insight to solving complex problems
How Students Are Selected to Participate in the Maryland Math Program
Teachers and math specialists at our partner schools select fourth grade students who would most benefit from the MMP program. Students participate on a year-long basis.
Maryland Family Literacy Program (MFLP)
The Maryland Family Literacy Program (formerly Partners in Print) works in partnership with the Latino Student Fund to provide a supportive environment where local adults meet virtually with MFLP mentors to improve their English language skills. MFLP mentors develop lessons and activities that help adult participants with functional English language challenges, like scheduling appointments, visiting doctors, and other everyday tasks. MFLP mentors do not need to know a second language in order to participate.
The Maryland Family Literacy Program runs on Thursdays from 5 to 8 p.m., and is conducted virtually. Mentors are required to work at least one consistent day a week for the duration of the semester.
MFLP Goals
The Maryland Family Literacy Program will:
- Provide participants with guidance for English language acquisition.
- Offer participants reading, writing, and conversational practice in English.
- Support English language learners in the community.
How Participants Are Selected for the Maryland Family Literacy Program
The Latino Student Fund recruits participants for MFLP based on need and current knowledge of English. Adults participants work with MFLP on a year-long basis.
Higher Achievement Middle School Program (HAMS)
The Higher Achievement Middle School Program is a community partnership reading and mentoring program catered towards 5th-8th graders. University of Maryland mentors work with a small group of students at least once a week on their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
The Higher Achievement Middle School Program runs on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4 to 7 p.m. Mentors are required to work at least one, consistent day a week for the duration of the semester. HAMS is being conducted IN-PERSON, and transportation to/from the school is provided.
HAMS Program Goals & Benefits
- Provide quality literacy tutoring for middle school students
- Prepare students with the necessary skills for high school and specialized higher education programs
- Encourage the pursuit of higher education
- UMD students can foster connections and create mentor-mentee relationships with middle school students
How Students Are Selected to Participate in HAMS
To get involved with Higher Achievement, Scholar applications must be filled out by the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the students.

Latino Student Fund K-12 In-Person Tutoring Program
The Latino Student Fund K-12 In-Person Tutoring Program is a community partnership with the Latino Student Fund to provide tutoring services to local elementary school students. University of Maryland provide tutoring services in reading, math, and other topics to students once a week.
The Latino Student Fund K-12 In-Person Tutoring Program runs on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Mentors are required to work once a week for the duration of the semester. The LSF K-12 In-Person Tutoring Program site is at UMD and takes place in Stamp.
LSF K-8 Program Goals & Benefits
- Improve reading ability and comprehension skills
- Increase knowledge on foundational math topics
- Provide guidance to advance student writing abilities
- Foster connections by engaging with elementary school students on a weekly basis
How Students Are Selected to Participate in LSF K-8 In-Person Tutoring
To get involved with the Latino Student Fund Tutoring program, applications must be filled out by the parent(s)/guardian(s) of the student.

Volunteer for Celebration Day
Celebrate the impact of its literacy and math tutoring programs with Maryland Reading Day and Maryland Math Celebration Day, rooted in the University of Maryland’s commitment to supporting youth education, and they have long served as highlights of the academic year.
