PK-12 Tutoring & Mentoring Training and Microcredentials

Are you involved with an organization, class, initiative at UMD that provides tutoring or mentoring to PK-12 students in the local community? LCSL currently offers two open learning courses that provide trianing and skill development to increase the impact of UMD students who are in PK-12 tutoring and mentoring roles. 

PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Foundations

  • This course introduces key foundations for UMD students who are serving as tutors or mentors in a PK-12 setting. Completion of the online course will result in the "PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Foundations" micro-credential. Participants will enhance their ability to create meaningful and professional connections with young learners, understand high-impact tutoring strategies, and identify ways to adapt one's practices to learners' needs.
  • Free to participate. Open only to UMD students, staff, and faculty.
  • Enroll in PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Foundations

PK-12 Tutoring & Mentoring Strategies

  • This course introduces key strategies for UMD students who are serving as tutors or mentors with PK-12 learners. Participants will enhance their understanding of evidence-based approaches for learning in reading and math as well as for supporting English speakers of other languages in tutoring and mentoring settings. Completion of the online course will result in the "PK-12 Tutoring and Mentoring Strategies" micro-credential. Participants will enhance their ability to support young learners with key approaches to literacy, math and multilingual learning.
  • Free to participate. Open only to UMD students, staff, and faculty.

Awards & Fellowships

Transform Mid-Atlantic

Transform Mid-Atlantic Civic Fellowship (TMACF) is a program that connects student leaders to develop their knowledge, leadership skills, and understanding of civic engagement. This fellowship is fit for students who are engaged global citizens, actively contributing to the creation of equitable, healthy, sustainable, and socially just communities. TMA’s member presidents are invited to nominate one student from their campus.

The Transform Mid-Atlantic Faculty Development Mini Grant Program supports member faculty that seek to enhance student learning and engagement. The program awards up to $10,000 each year to help faculty initiate or continue programs related to civic and community engagement, service-learning, community-based learning and research. and collaborative intercampus and community-based partnerships.

Transform Mid-Atlantic also holds the Service-Learning & Civic Engagement Conference (SLCE) open to students, faculty and staff at institutions in D.C., Maryland, and Delaware. The SLCE Conference offers full-day panels, discussions, professional development and networking opportunities! The SLCE Conference is usually held in late-March or early-April.

Transform Mid-Atlantic also hosts an annual TMA Awards Program. TMA offers several award opportunities to member institutions' faculty and staff! Awards recognize excellence in service-learning, community-based research and learning, and civic and community engagement. 

AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is an agency that connects volunteers and nonprofit organizations to tackle challenges in the United States. Their areas of impact include disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, veterans and military families.

Peace Corps

Peace Corps is an agency that builds and maintains relationships with global communities through volunteer opportunities. Peace Corps supports volunteers so they can live and work with community members to grow, teach, learn and create change. They provide opportunities in agriculture, community economic development, education, environment, health, and youth in development.

Services 24/7 on GivePulse

Services 24/7 is a free virtual resource designed to connect the University of Maryland community with nonprofit organizations to increase their capacity to serve. On Services 24/7 you can:

  • Search for local events, groups, and causes that you care most about.
  • Review, reflect and share your volunteer experience through the impact function.
  • Organize registration for volunteer events and recruit Maryland students, faculty, and staff.
