The 2021 Spirit of Maryland Award

The Spirit of Maryland Award is presented annually, in lieu of a traditional Homecoming King or Queen honoree, to two members of the senior class who through their achievements have most exemplified the "spirit" of the University of Maryland. Criteria for the award include outstanding scholarship, leadership, campus involvement, community service, and communication skills. A committee composed of faculty, staff, and alumni interviews students who are advanced to the final round of the application process.

Marjorie Justine Cruz Antonio

History and American Studies

Marjorie Justine Cruz Antonio (MARR-juh-rhee JUST-een Kuh-roose An-TOH-nee-OH) is a History and American Studies double major from Quezon (Keh-zon) City Philippines and Baltimore, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the Co-President of the Asian American Student Union, and former Vice President of Community Education for the organization. She is the Performing Arts Director for Student Entertainment Events (SEE). She also has been a curator for the NextNOW Fest.

Cell Biology and Genetics

Tess Baldwin is a Cell Biology and Genetics major from Bethesda, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the Head Resident Assistant of Denton Hall. She has been a Peer Mentor for the College Park Scholars Global Public Health Program and a recipient of the Scholar’s Outstanding Citizenship Award. She also participated in cardiovascular research at the University of Maryland School of Medicine with the UM Scholars Program.

Emily Leo is a Bioengineering major from Potomac, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the Co-President, Vice- President and Artistic Director of Ballet Company M. She is the Director of Outreach for the Society of Women Engineers. She also is the Vice President of Alumni Programming of the Student Alumni Leadership Council.

Neurobiology and Physiology, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

Jacqueline Liu (Lee-oo) is a Neurobiology and Physiology, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies double major from Frederick, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the President, Vice President of Advocacy, and Social Chair of the Asian American Student Union. She has served as a Community Organizing Intern for the Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA) Office. Additionally, she is conducting epidemiological research at the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

Madhulika Nallani (Muh-dhoo-lee-kah Nuh-lah-nee) is a Cell Biology and Genetics major from Laurel, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the Director of Academic Affairs for the Student Government Association. She also is a Research Assistant for both the School of Public Health and the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department.

Psychology

M Pease (Peez) is a Psychology major with High Honors with minors in Asian American Studies and Public Leadership. They are from Gaithersburg, Maryland. Their leadership and involvement experiences have include the following activities: They are the Administrative Director and President of the Help Center, a Senator in the University Senate. They are also a researcher at Gender, Culture, and Health Labaratory.

Philosophy Politics, & Economics, and Women Studies

Nabila Prasetiawan (Nah-bee-la Prah-set-ee-ah-wan) is a Philosophy Politics, & Economics, and Women Studies double major from Middletown, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: In 2020-21 she was the Vice President of the Student Government Association. She formerly has been the Lectures Director and Performing Arts Director of Student Entertainment Events (SEE). She also currently is the Co- Vice President of External Affairs of the Asian American Student Union.

Government and Politics

Josie Shaffer (SHAY-fer) is a Government and Politics major with a minor in History from Pikesville, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is currently the Vice President of the Student Government Association, and also has served as the Director of Student Affairs, and Denton Representative for the organization. She has served as the Chair of the Facilities Student Advisory Subcommittee. Josie is an Ambassador for the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Alythia Vo (uh-LEE-thee-uh V-OH) is a Neurobiology and Physiology and Spanish double major from Rockville, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is President (Former Vice President of Internal Affairs and Social Chair) of the Asian American Student Union. She is the Recruitment and Community Outreach Chair of Omicron Delta Kappa. She is also an Undergraduate Research Assistant at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Supply Chain and Marketing

Gabriela Winter is a Supply Chain and Marketing double major from Ashton, Maryland. Her leadership and involvement experiences include the following activities: She is the President of the Student Alumni Leadership Council and has also served as the Vice President of Membership for the organization. She has been a Teaching Assistant for the Public Leadership Scholars program. She also was the Vice President of Finance of the Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity.
