College Park, MD. Basement is an exhibition that celebrates the hidden lives of the strangers we take for granted. For students at the University of Maryland, the proximity to Washington, DC, encourages them to become part of the city's community. During museum visits, internship commutes, and study breaks, students have been confronted with anonymous faces of residents and visitors throughout the District. Basement gives these faces depth, claiming importance for the people we don't give more than a glance. Each artwork displayed in the exhibition creates a candid, authentic glimpse into the lives of those just outside of view. For tourists, residents, or students, DC has much to offer, even if it is just below the surface.
This exhibition is supported in part by the Maryland State Arts Council (msac.org)
CURATOR BIO
Sydney Feurer ‘29, an Art History and Studio Art student with a focus in museum studies, uses her experience to challenge and dissect the limits of social connection. Believing in art as a form of authentic expression, Feurer aims to encourage moral questioning through her curatorial works, creating spaces for deep thought and deliberation.
