William Spann Obituary

photo of Bill SpannOn June 28, 2024 William (Bill) Crawford Spann passed away peacefully in Towson, MD. He was the beloved husband of Ruth Elizabeth Spann; devoted father of Sean Spann and his husband Bud Williams and Chris Spann and his wife Shannon Wood; loving grandfather of Sydney Spann, Aidan Spann, Reece Spann, Jackson Spann, and Grier Spann; dear brother of Robert Spann and the late Thomas Spann; and lifelong friend Bill Borges.

Bill retired as the Associate Vice President for Institutional Research and Advancement at the University of Maryland after nearly 40 years of service, much of it as the Registrar. After retiring, he began his next chapter as a volunteer and in service to the places and communities he lived in and
loved like Chincoteague Island, Virginia. He loved his volunteer work and service as President and Treasurer on Boards for the Chincoteague Museum, Chincoteague Island Arts Organization/Island Theater, and YMCA.

A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the William C. Spann Scholarship Fund at the University of Maryland, the Chincoteague Island Art Organization, or the American Cancer Society.
