Native & Indigenous Student Involvement

About Us

Native & Indigenous Student Involvement focuses on engaging, supporting, and fostering understanding for our diverse Indigenous and Native communities. In addition to Native and First Nations people, Indigenous identities span cultures around the world, including (but not limited to) Native Hawaiian, Indigenous South American, and the global communities of the Arctic Circle. We invite those who identify with indigeneity to connect with us. We also seek to educate the UMD community about Indigenous community, history and culture, and are committed to the creation and maintenance of a campus environment where Native/Indigenous identities and issues are affirmed and supported.

It Means More Campaign

Cultural appropriation is much bigger than Halloween. Year-round, we often see celebrities profiting off of components of marginalized cultures, getting praised for expressing what actual members of these cultures are ridiculed and even punished for. We see braids and dreadlocks, moccasins, and henna tattoos, for example, turned into fashion statements and trends. There is a fine line between cultural appreciation and appropriation, and with this campaign, we hope to start a campus-wide dialogue about how to discern between the two.
