University Career Center
UMD's Career Center is a great place to visit to start building your journey to success. The career center helps students explore options and find the right fit for a career through career checklists, resume building, networking events, interviewing tips, and much more! They also have many helpful ways for students to gain experience through internships and career fairs, as well as key strategies and advice on furthering your education.
The University Career Center is located on the third floor of the South Wing in Hornbake Library.
Handshake
Handshake is the Career Center's primary online career and internship site. On Handshake, you can search for entry-level jobs, internship positions, schedule individual appointments with a career advisor, access exclusive career center tips and resources, and RSVP for a career workshop or employer information session.
This is UMD students’ best resource for full- and part-time jobs and internships.
TOCSL Tips
- Working on-campus is a great way to connect with professors, faculty, or at your favorite food place, but most importantly, on-campus employers understand student demands and courses !
- You can work at your on-campus jobs between classes, which will help to maximize your time !
- Make sure to attend a career or internship fair, which are hosted in the Fall and Spring. When you do find a fair of your interest, make sure to register ASAP!

Transferring to a brand new university is socially challenging but can also be academically challenging due to the potential differences in class sizes or course rigor.

Academic Counseling
TOCSL wants you to be successful here at UMD, so we urge you to set up an appointment with an academic skills counselor who will help you learn techniques to manage time and demands of classes, help on improving results from your study efforts, ways to get more from your reading and much more.

Writing Center
Want someone to take a second look at your paper or help improve your writing skills? Trained consultants are there to helps you enhance your writing and thinking skills for your academic work and your future career.
The Writing Center is located in Tawes Hall and have trained consultants available for appointments or walk-ins.
TOCSL Tips
- The Counseling Center and Writing Center both offer FREE workshops on topics related to writing, teaching writing, time management, and improving approaches to studying and learning at UMD. TAKE ADVANTAGE!
- Upholding Academic Integrity is not an option; it is a way of life here at UMD, so make sure to sit in front of your classes, get to know your professors and TAs, form study groups, and reach out to these resources whenever you are struggling with the course material or feeling overwhelmed.
