Studio A will be offering online classes and workshops in lieu of our art camps for summer 2020! Open to young artists ages 6 - 12, our teaching artists will host weekly or single session classes online through Zoom.

Class information and Supply lists

Paint Like Picasso (all ages)

Instructor: Jianna Howard

Description: In this 2-part workshop, kids will be introduced to the work of Pablo Picasso in a brief history lesson and will then use their new found knowledge to paint a self portrait during the first part of the workshop that will be cut up and turned into an abstract piece of art during the second part of the workshop.

When: Thursday, 7/23/2020 (1 day with a lunch break from 12pm-2pm)

Supplies Needed at Home:

  • At least 3 sheets of card-stock or any sturdy paper
  • Paint and paint brushes, though any medium (acrylic, watercolor, markers, colored pencils) can be used to create the portrait

Learning Colors Jellyfish Craft Ages 6-8

Instructor: Jianna Howard

Description: During this workshop, kids will learn about primary, secondary, and complimentary colors while they create 3D jellyfish with common household items.

Supplies Needed at Home:

  • Paper plates can be substituted with any kind of paper, preferably something sturdy
  • Black and white felt, can be substituted with construction paper
  • Ribbon (all different colors - participants will learn about color patterns and choose which one's they'd like to use)

Fun with Yoga! - Ages 6-8

Instructor: Noor Nabulsi

Description: In this workshop, children will learn yoga poses through stories, songs, and games that are fun and engaging! Students will warm up with stretches and upbeat dances and games, followed by a flow of yoga pose set to a story to strengthen the body. After our exercise, we will relax and reflect in savasana (resting pose). The children will learn to self-regulate the body and mind with breathwork and meditation at the end of the class.

Frida Kahlo Guided Paint Ages 9-12

Instructor: Jianna Howard

Description: In this one hour workshop, kids will learn about Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter, while they are led in a guided paint style event. The instructor will lead participants in painting a portrait of Frida Kahlo herself.

When: Thursday, 8/6/2020 (1 session)

Supplies Needed at Home:

  • 8" x 10" canvas (or any rectangular size participant is comfortable with), sturdy paper can be used as a replacement
  • Acrylic paint (colors: white, black, red, yellow, green, tan flesh tone, pink (can mix red and yellow), turquoise (can mix blue, green, yellow, and white)
  • Paint brushes
  • A paint palette to mix on (can be a piece of cardboard, old plastic tray, etc.)
  • Cup of water
  • Charcoal

Mixed Media - Ages 6-8

Instructor: Noor Nabulsi

Description: This 5-week course is a fun and interactive class that will teach the basics of all things mixed media. Each week, students will learn the basics of different kinds of mixed media including collage making, acrylic painting, flower pressing, clay creations, and more! At the end of the course, students will share their work and hand-make their own portfolios. Students will learn how to create meaning in their art and be more mindful of the artistic decisions they make by practicing the techniques they learn in the class!

When: Saturdays, 7/11/2020 to 8/1/2020 (5 weeks)

Time: 11:00AM - 12:00PM

Supplies Needed at Home:

  • some kind of drawing utensil, could be a pencil, pen or marker
  • 4 sheets of drawing or mixed media paper
  • access to live flowers or plants for the first week (will be picked off to be pressed)
  • colored drawing utensils, could be colored pencils, colored markers, crayons, etc
  • a magazine; glue stick or modge podge
  • acrylic paint (primary colors + black and white)
  • 2 sheets of paper larger than 8.5"x11" to be made into a portfolio
  • tape

 

 

Photography - Ages 9-12

Instructor: Noor Nabulsi

Description: During this 4-week course, students will learn about digital photography skills and methods through exercises out in the real world and by sharing their pictures every week. I will be teaching the various skills that go along with photography such as the rule of thirds, lighting, parts of a camera, and other skills that are important to keep in mind when taking pictures. I will also have practical exercises for the students to work on each week that will help them practice the skills taught. For this class, students may use any camera that is available to them, including a cellphone, DSLR, or a film camera!

When: Tuesdays, 7/7/2020 to 7/28/2020 (4 weeks)

Supplies Needed at Home:

  • any camera will do, but make sure you are able to turn the photos into JPEGs or PSDs.


Back to the Basics: Acrylic Paint - Ages 9 - 12

Instructor: Adwoa Andoh

Description: This weekly class will teach students fundamental skills in acrylic painting such as choosing colors, blending, painting backgrounds, brush techniques etc. Each class will be set up as guided (they are however free to engage their own artistic liberty) paint session focusing on one fundamental skill.

When: Wednesdays, 7/15/2020 to 8/12/2020 (6 weeks)

Learning Textures Lilypad Craft Ages 6-8

Instructor: Jianna Howard

Description: During this workshop, kids will explore the different types of textures that can be used while constructing a 3D piece of art. Multiple mediums will be used to make a paper lilypad including painting, drawing, and mixed media.

  • Card-stock or any heavy paper for watercolor
  • Watercolor paint palette and a paint brush, can be made with food coloring and water

Drawing Fundamentals - Ages 6 - 8
